I wrote this poem at the VCCA Le Moulin à Nef art residency in southern France, summer, 2016. My beautiful, light-filled studio faced the Garonne River.

I sit with the sound of

rain that isn’t

rain its plinky symphony

keeping time with the

rhythm of my pulse

The fish bubble...

I have a sad face

it is a fact

even when I don’t feel

particularly so

everyone used to say it

why do you look so sad?

the constant inquiry as a child

Once I was given a bear

I called “Honey”

with the same eyes

the same expression

he is sad like you

said the gifter
